ICE detained material witness who helped Houston police identify armed suspect, complicating gun case prosecution
On August 9, 2026, an ICE agent detained a man in Alief, Houston, immediately after he called police to report a shooting outside a Home Depot on Bellaire Boulevard and helped officers identify and locate the armed suspect. Houston police said they had not contacted ICE and had not finished their investigation when the agent took the witness into custody and left the scene. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare said losing the witness complicates prosecuting the gun case and described a broader pattern of cooperating witnesses disappearing into ICE custody.
