    The Standing is a static archive. We try to collect as little about you as possible: there are no accounts, no advertising, and no third-party tracking.

    What we don't collect

    We don't ask you to create an account, we don't set our own cookies, and we don't embed advertising networks, social-media trackers, or analytics scripts that profile you across the web. Reading The Standing does not require you to share any personal information with us.

    Hosting and analytics (Cloudflare)

    The Standing is hosted and delivered by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare automatically processes standard technical information about each request — such as your IP address, browser type, the pages you request, and the date and time — in order to serve the site and protect it from abuse.

    Cloudflare also provides us with aggregate, privacy-preserving traffic analytics — for example, total page views, popular pages, referring sites, and general device and country information. These analytics are cookieless and are not used to identify or follow individual visitors; we use them only to understand, in aggregate, how the site is being read. Cloudflare's handling of this data is governed by Cloudflare's privacy policy.

    If you contact us or submit a tip

    If you email us a tip or a correction, we receive your message and your email address, and we keep them only as long as needed to act on the message and maintain the editorial record. Tips submitted through our public issue tracker are, by design, public — please don't include anything in them you wouldn't want published.

    If you subscribe to our newsletter

    If you sign up for our newsletter, your email address is collected and stored by our newsletter provider, Buttondown, solely to send you the newsletter. Sign-up is double opt-in, and every email includes a one-click unsubscribe. Buttondown's handling of your data is governed by its own privacy policy.

    What we don't do

    We don't sell, rent, or trade your information, and we don't share it with anyone other than the service providers named above (Cloudflare, and Buttondown if you subscribe) strictly so they can perform their function.

    Changes

    We may update this policy as the site evolves; we'll change the date above when we do.
