Fargo police arrested Tennessee grandmother Angela Lipps based on unverified Clearview AI facial-recognition match; she was jailed five months
On July 14, 2025, Fargo, North Dakota police obtained a nationwide-extradition warrant for Angela Lipps, 50, based substantially on a Clearview AI facial-recognition match supplied by neighboring West Fargo police — a tool Fargo's own chief later said the department would not have used had he known about it. Lipps, a Tennessee grandmother who says she had never been to North Dakota, was arrested and held for approximately five months before bank records proved she was in Tennessee during the crimes. Fargo's interim police chief subsequently acknowledged errors and barred further use of the tool.
