ICE and LaSalle Corrections denied pregnant detainee prenatal care at Louisiana facility; she delivered a stillborn baby

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and its contractor, LaSalle Corrections, denied Iris Dayana Monterroso Lemus, a pregnant Guatemalan detainee, adequate prenatal care during her detention at Richwood Correctional Center in Richwood, Louisiana, and she delivered a stillborn baby on April 29, 2025, after days of unaddressed complaints that she had stopped feeling fetal movement. Federal records later obtained by The Intercept through a Freedom of Information Act request showed no completed ultrasound or OB-GYN visit, contradicting a later DHS public denial that she lacked care.

Education Department terminated $1 billion in school mental health grants without required individualized review

On April 29, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education sent termination notices ending roughly $1 billion in multiyear school mental health grants created under the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, telling grantees the awards no longer aligned with the Trump administration's priorities. A coalition of 16 states sued, and in December 2025 a federal judge ruled the terminations violated the Administrative Procedure Act because the department gave no individualized reasoning, ordering the grants reinstated. The department has since moved to terminate the grants again, and litigation over whether that renewed effort complies with the court's order remains active as of September 2026.
