ICE deported Oceanside father of a U.S. Marine without notice or a hearing, despite his deferred-action protection
On October 9, 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Esteban Rios Sosa, an Oceanside, California father of a U.S. Marine, when he reported to a federal building in San Diego for what he had been told was a routine ICE check-in, and deported him to Mexico within 24 hours without notice or a hearing. Rios Sosa held deferred-action status tied to a pending U visa application, and he and his wife had already been briefly detained and released with ankle monitors three weeks earlier after being stopped at a Camp Pendleton gate while visiting their pregnant daughter, who is married to a Marine. A federal judge ruled in September 2026 that the deportation violated Rios Sosa's due-process rights and ordered the government to immediately facilitate his return.
