Kansas City transit authority signed secret contract authorizing facial-recognition profiling of bus riders

On July 24, 2025, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) signed a three-year, auto-renewing contract with SafeSpace Global, a penny-stock company carrying a $23.7 million accumulated deficit and a going-concern warning, authorizing AI cameras that would generate facial-recognition profiles of bus riders, capture their video and audio, and use the resulting data to train the company's algorithms. The contract barred both parties from public disclosure and KCATA had no policy governing the biometric data; the signed agreement remained outside the public record for a year, until The Kansas City Defender obtained it through a records request.
