Nevada prison guards beat inmate Malik Avila during cell extraction, causing fatal brain injury; coroner ruled death natural
On November 4, 2025, a Nevada Department of Corrections Correctional Emergency Response Team went hands-on with 24-year-old inmate Malik Avila during a cell extraction at High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs, Nevada, after his family reported he was having a seizure; a recording captured Avila pleading "please stop, please stop" during the takedown. Avila was airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital and died 18 days later, on November 22, 2025, from lack of oxygen and brain damage; the Clark County Coroner classified the death as natural, but a wrongful-death lawsuit filed August 4, 2026 alleges guards beat Avila and that the warden gave the family false information about the incident.
