Gov. Jared Polis fired two Colorado clemency board members after they publicly criticized his commutation of Tina Peters
Colorado Governor Jared Polis fired two members of the state's Executive Clemency Advisory Board on July 1, 2026, after they publicly criticized his May 2026 commutation of convicted election denier Tina Peters. Azra Taslimi and Hannah Seigel Proff had participated in the board's two unanimous votes against Peters's clemency application and subsequently co-wrote a Denver Post opinion piece revealing those votes and criticizing the governor's override. Polis stated in termination letters that the two members had "breached the required duty of confidentiality by publicly divulging Board members' votes pertaining to a clemency application."
Grand Junction police fatally shot Patti Wilson, a transgender woman, firing into her fleeing car
On June 19, 2026, two Grand Junction, Colorado police officers responding to a report of a person with a knife at a Dairy Queen fired roughly 11 shots at Patti Wilson, a 31-year-old transgender woman, striking her twice as she drove away and killing her. Her fleeing vehicle then struck multiple other cars, injuring another person and overturning one. The department later identified the officers as Zachary Diaz and Tim Long, who were placed on paid administrative leave pending an independent 21st Judicial District investigation.
Colorado Gov. Polis commutes Tina Peters' election-tampering sentence after Trump pressure campaign
On May 15, 2026, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis commuted the nine-year prison sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, convicted in 2024 of tampering with the county's election equipment, ordering her release on parole June 1, 2026 -- roughly halving her sentence. The commutation followed a months-long public pressure campaign by President Donald Trump that combined personal insults of Polis ("Scumbag Governor"), threats to federal disaster aid and federal program placements in Colorado, and repeated demands on Truth Social to "FREE TINA!" Peters's conviction was a state offense and so sat outside Trump's federal pardon power; clemency could come only from Polis.

Huerfano County jail staff denied dying inmate Michael Burch medical care for 8 days after tackle injury; he died in his cell
On March 28, 2023, a Huerfano County, Colorado detention officer tased and tackled 69-year-old inmate Michael Burch, fracturing six ribs and collapsing a lung, and jail staff and the facility's contracted healthcare provider then denied him hospital care despite his repeated pleas over the following eight days. Burch died in his cell at the Huerfano County Detention Center on April 4, 2023, and a coroner ruled the death a homicide.
