Mexican detainee Felix Alcorta-Rodriguez, 63, died in ICE custody at Webb County Detention Center in Laredo; 20th ICE death of 2026

Felix Alcorta-Rodriguez, a 63-year-old Mexican national, died on June 19, 2026, roughly an hour after being found unresponsive at 9:13 p.m. inside the Webb County Detention Center in Laredo, Texas. Detention staff began lifesaving measures and summoned emergency responders, who took him by ambulance to Laredo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:02 p.m. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had arrested him on June 16, immediately after his release from the Webb County Jail, where he had been held on an outstanding warrant tied to a 2018 driving-while-intoxicated charge.

According to a notification ICE is required by federal law to send Congress, Alcorta died in the agency's custody; his death had not previously been reported and was not initially listed on ICE's website. Dr. Corinne Stern, Webb County's medical examiner, said Alcorta died of "natural causes" and that the death was not related to his incarceration, though the full autopsy remained pending. His was at least the fifth death in Texas immigration detention in 2026 and at least the 20th nationwide — a pace of fatalities in ICE custody not seen in decades.

The facility where Alcorta was held, operated by the private prison company CoreCivic, had come under recent scrutiny. A February 2026 ICE inspection documented at least nine violations of proper-care standards over a three-day visit, roughly a third of them concerning inadequate medical care, including findings that staff did not properly monitor detainees for suicide risk or sufficiently care for pregnant women. CoreCivic did not respond to questions about the death.
