Acting DNI Pulte announced a fourth round of ODNI staff cuts, again without disclosing numbers or positions affected

On July 27, 2026, acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte posted on X that ODNI had "just finished a 4th round of thoughtful, measured layoffs," continuing a pattern of unquantified staff reductions dating to his June 22 directive. On July 27, 2026, acting DNI Bill Pulte posted on X shortly after midnight that ODNI had "just finished a 4th round of thoughtful, measured layoffs," saying his team had been "smartly, and carefully, reducing the size of ODNI, re-focusing ODNI on national security, the law, and the statute." As with the prior three rounds, Pulte did not disclose how many employees were affected, which positions or offices were targeted, or whether staff were terminated outright or reassigned.

The announcement extended a pattern dating to Pulte's June 22, 2026 directive ordering ODNI offices to rank personnel for cuts: a first round of firings on June 23 removed six political appointees and reassigned roughly 45 career officers, and a third round was announced July 10. The Washington Post separately reported that ODNI had cut or reassigned roughly 200 employees since June 1, 2026 — on top of the 500-700 employees cut under Pulte's predecessor, Tulsi Gabbard — leaving the office at "likely well below half" of its prior roughly 2,000-person staff. The fourth round came as the Senate took up the confirmation of Jay Clayton, Trump's nominee for permanent DNI. A fifth round followed the next day, July 28.
