ICE and HSI encounter in St. Augustine drove Mexican tourist Juan Jairo Coronilla Duran into traffic; he died

On July 14, 2026, Juan Jairo Coronilla Duran, a 28-year-old Mexican national, was struck and killed by a semi-truck while fleeing a traffic stop by agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) near State Road 16 in St. Augustine, Florida. Coronilla Duran was one of four passengers in a vehicle that pulled into a gas station parking lot before 7 a.m. when ICE and HSI agents approached; all four fled on foot. He ran across the highway, lost his footing in the median, and was struck by an oncoming tractor-trailer. The Florida Highway Patrol and DHS declined to provide additional details, citing an ongoing investigation.

Coronilla Duran was in the United States lawfully on a valid tourist visa. He had traveled from his hometown of San Luis de la Paz in Guanajuato, Mexico, to Atlanta to visit family and friends, then traveled to Florida's east coast just two days before his death. He had already purchased a return flight to Mexico for that weekend. His wife, Yezika Alamilla, reached the Orlando-based farmworkers' advocacy group Colectivo Arbol the day after his death seeking help to repatriate his remains; she told them he had a tourist visa and had been in the country for only three weeks. The Mexican state of Guanajuato confirmed his identity and valid visa status on July 21, 2026. His death was the third fatality arising from ICE encounters in a single week and at least the tenth death involving federal immigration agents since the start of the Trump administration's mass-deportation campaign.
