Treasury's OFAC opened a Cuba-sanctions inquiry into Hasan Piker, Medea Benjamin and dozens of other convoy participants

In late May 2026, the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sought financial, logistical, and communications records from a group of prominent left-wing critics of the administration in connection with a humanitarian aid trip to Cuba. As first reported by Fox News on May 24, the recipients included Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, CodePink co-founder Medea Benjamin, CodePink Washington coordinator Olivia DiNucci, and Isra Hirsi — the daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar — among an estimated 40 American citizens. OFAC's demands concern CodePink's "Nuestra América Convoy" of March 2026, which brought medicine and medical supplies to Cuban hospitals, and the probe examines whether that aid violated U.S. Cuba sanctions administered under the Cuban Assets Control Regulations.

Accounts differed on the formality of the demands. Fox News described them as administrative subpoenas, or requests for information. In an initial May 24 statement, CodePink said Benjamin had not personally received a subpoena. On May 29, Benjamin publicly confirmed that the organization had received an OFAC inquiry — delivered by email to co-founder Jodie Evans — that posed roughly a dozen detailed questions about the trip, including how participants traveled, where they stayed, and what they did each hour they were in Cuba. Benjamin said the convoy involved about 170 people and delivered roughly $600,000 in humanitarian supplies, and she characterized the trip as lawful and morally justified.

The individuals selected for scrutiny are among the administration's most visible political opponents in antiwar and Cuba-solidarity circles, and the records sought reach into their finances, communications, and associations. Deploying sanctions-enforcement authority against high-profile critics over a publicized humanitarian mission places government investigative power in direct contact with protected political and expressive activity.
