Wyoming Gov. Gordon signed SF0062 requiring K-12 students to use restrooms and facilities matching sex assigned at birth

On March 3, 2025, Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon signed Senate File 0062, enrolled as Act No. 53 and codified at W.S. 21-3-137, into law. The statute requires every public school district in Wyoming, from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, to designate multiple-occupancy restrooms, sex-designated changing facilities, and sleeping quarters used for school-sponsored activities for the exclusive use of one sex, which the law defines by reproductive biology at birth. In practice this bars transgender students from using facilities that match their gender identity.

The law permits schools to offer only a single-occupancy "reasonable accommodation," directs school boards to adopt discipline for students who refuse to comply, and prohibits boards from adopting any policy contrary to the statute. It also creates a parental right of action, allowing parents to sue a school district that does not enforce the requirements. The act took effect immediately upon signing.

SF0062 was passed by the Wyoming Legislature during the 2025 general session and is the K-12-specific measure among a pair of sex-designation bills Gordon signed the same day. The ACLU of Wyoming, which opposed the bill, said the policy singles out transgender youth, and Wyoming Public Media reported that the law bars students from spaces that do not correspond to their sex assigned at birth.
