Attempts to overturn results post-election
Post-election overturning attempts are efforts, by officeholders or candidates and their organized supporters, to reverse legitimate election outcomes after the vote has been cast and counted. Concrete forms include pressuring state legislatures to substitute their judgment for the popular vote, pressuring secretaries of state to "find" votes, organized challenges in courts and to certifying bodies based on claims already rejected on the evidence, and physical or threatened disruption of certification proceedings. Routine recount and legal-challenge processes provided by law are not overturning attempts; the standard is conduct that seeks to reverse a legitimate outcome through means outside the lawful electoral process.
